After being in the process of development for several years, Netflix has officially released a new trailer for its upcoming DC project “Sweet Tooth,” which is an adaptation of a beloved comic of the same name published by DC’s Vertigo imprint.

“Sweet Tooth” is a limited series written and drawn by Canadian Jeff Lemire. Dubbed by some as “Mad Max meets Bambi,” it takes place in a mostly rural post-apocalyptic setting where some creatures are human/animal hybrids.

Sweet Tooth, as a post-apocalyptic parable, is rife with influences such as Tim Truman’s “Scout: War Shaman” and the “Winterworld” three-issue mini-series. It also holds art influenced by Richard Corben’s “A Boy and His Dog,” written by Harlan Ellison, and “The Punisher: The End,” written by Garth Ennis.

On Nov. 16, 2018, it was announced that streaming service Hulu had given a pilot order to a potential television series adaptation of the comic book series, which later flopped to a different streaming giant. On April 9, 2020, it was announced that the series has been moved from Hulu to Netflix. On May 12, 2020, Netflix had given the production a series order for a first season consisting of eight episodes.

The pilot is expected to be written and directed by Jim Mickle who is also set to executive produce alongside Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell and Linda Moran. Production companies involved with the pilot are slated to consist of Team Downey and Warner Bros. Television.

The Cast includes Christian Convery as Gus, Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd, Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Singh, Will Forte as Gus’ father, Dania Ramirez as Aimee, Neil Sandilands as General Steven Abbot, Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear and Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh. The series will be narrated by James Brolin.

DC has made Netflix its new home for creating adaptations for its vertigo imprint with other shows like “Lucifer” and “Sandman,” which is coming soon to Netflix.
