San Diego Comic-Con International wrapped Sunday after four days of panels, trailers and surprise reveals, and this year both Marvel Studios and DC Studios came out swinging.
Comic-Con itself hit a milestone of its own: Comic-Con International will remain in San Diego through 2030, following a new agreement between the convention, the city and regional tourism partners.
Marvel Studios
Marvel confirmed “Black Panther 3” during its Hall H panel, dated for 2028, with Ryan Coogler returning to direct. David Jonsson, known for “Industry” and “The Long Walk,” will step into the role of the new Black Panther.
Marvel also announced Ryan Gosling is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider, one of the weekend’s most talked about casting reveals.
The Hall H crowd got an exclusive look at “Avengers: Doomsday,” including new footage centered on Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom and his complicated history with Reed Richards. Ryan Reynolds made a surprise appearance in full Deadpool costume during the panel, stepping out of the audience before joking about muscling his way into extra scenes.
On the comics side, Marvel unveiled “Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium,” a five issue limited series following the character after the events of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
DC Studios and DC Comics
DC Studios shared new details on “Lanterns,” confirming the Manhunters will serve as the series’ central threat and teasing a possible appearance from the Red Lanterns.
The publisher’s “Metropolis and Beyond” panel brought together Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson, Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, Nicole Maines and Sanford Greene to discuss the next phase of DC’s “All In” comics line and what’s ahead for Superman’s home city.
“My Adventures with Superman” Season 3 got its own spotlight, with showrunners Jake Wyatt and Brendan Clogher joined by voice cast members Jack Quaid, Alice Lee, Ishmel Sahid and Kiana Madeira to preview Clark and Lois’ evolving partnership and higher stakes in Metropolis.
Fans also got an early screening of the first episode of “Batman: Caped Crusader” Season 2 ahead of its July 31 premiere on Prime Video, alongside confirmation of a companion game, “Batman: Caped Crusader: Chronicles,” launching the same day on Amazon Luna.
DC picked up hardware at the Eisner Awards as well, with “Absolute Martian Manhunter” winning best limited series. Artist Javier Rodríguez took home best penciller/inker and shared best cover artist honors, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou also won for the title.
No new footage or casting news broke for “Man of Tomorrow,” the Superman sequel from writer-director James Gunn still slated for July 2027, though it remained a popular topic of fan speculation throughout the weekend.
