Police investigate fatal shooting near Midtown Greenway in south Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) is investigating the fatal shooting of a young male near the Midtown Greenway in south Minneapolis on Wednesday night.

Officers responded at approximately 8:40 p.m. Oct. 7, 2026, to reports of a person shot near the Greenway, in the area of Stevens Avenue South and East Lake Street, according to an MPD news release. They found a male with an apparent fatal gunshot wound lying on the ground. Police have not released his identity.

Preliminary information indicates that two males were seen leaving the area, police said. The department has not released descriptions of the two or said whether they are considered suspects.

Officers secured the scene and canvassed the area for witnesses and evidence. MPD forensic scientists processed the scene, and MPD homicide investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting. There have been no arrests.

The shooting occurred along the Midtown Greenway, a corridor that runs east-west across south Minneapolis, near one of the city’s busiest commercial streets. Police have not said whether the victim and the two males were known to each other.
