The Daily Planet released Planet Playlist no. 4, “Gold & Gather,” a Spotify playlist designed to set the mood for autumn gatherings with loved ones.

Built around thankfulness and togetherness, the collection is meant to play in the background of the season’s get-togethers, from quiet evenings at home to a crowded Thanksgiving table. The playlist is a living one, and more songs could be added as the season goes on.

It opens with the folk and indie sounds that have come to define fall. Noah Kahan appears five times, with “Stick Season,” “Downfall,” “Paid Time Off,” “Maine” and “Draw You Out,” the last from the soundtrack to “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.” Hozier, Bon Iver, Gregory Alan Isakov, Lord Huron and The Lumineers share the early stretch with Taylor Swift’s “cardigan,” “evermore” and “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version).”

Autumn is intentionally named throughout. “Autumn Leaves” appears in versions by Nat King Cole, Vince Guaraldi and SIENNA SPIRO, while Iron & Wine’s “Autumn Town Leaves,” JVKE’s “this is what autumn feels like” and Julie London’s “November Twilight” carry the season forward.

The middle of the playlist settles into jazz and standards for the dinner hour, mainly catered by our very own Becka Kottke. Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Aretha Franklin sit alongside John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, with Nat King Cole’s “Smile” and Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” among the highlights. Thanksgiving gets its own thread through Ben Rector’s “The Thanksgiving Song,” Bing Crosby’s “I’ve Got Plenty To Be Thankful For,” George Winston’s “Thanksgiving” and Guaraldi’s “Thanksgiving Theme.”

Home and family run through the second half. “Crowded Table” by The Highwomen, “Our House” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound” and The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey” make the case for gathering. Classic songwriting rounds out the set, including “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” by my grandmother’s high school classmate and Hibbing hometown’s star, Bob Dylan, Neil Young’s “We’re Going to Be Friends” and The Beatles’ “Blackbird.”

Planet Playlist is the Daily Planet’s recurring music feature, with each edition published as a Spotify playlist.
