“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” swung past every box office expectation over the weekend, grossing $360 million domestically from 4,487 North American theaters. The tally marks the biggest domestic opening weekend ever, surpassing the previous record held by 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” which opened to $357.1 million.
The Sony and Marvel release, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, also set the all-time opening day record with $168 million on Friday. Thursday screenings brought in $72 million, which is also a record.
Worldwide, the film debuted at $927 million, the largest global opening in box office history, and is expected to cross $1 billion within days. The Associated Press confirmed the record in a breaking news alert published Saturday afternoon; the film now holds the biggest opening in history.
The film’s release also helped push the broader North American marketplace to a record $429 million weekend, according to Variety’s box office analysis. Strong holdover business from Universal’s “The Odyssey” contributed to the total, which surpassed the previous collective weekend record set by “Endgame” in 2019.
“Brand New Day” follows 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which opened to $260 million domestically and finished its run at $1.9 billion worldwide. That film was boosted by a crossover appearance from all three live-action Spider-Man actors: Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
The new film has also drawn strong reviews, posting a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the highest of any live-action Spider-Man film to date. It also earned a 90% Certified Fresh critics score, just below the 93 percent rating for “No Way Home.”
Holland’s future in the role remains an open question. The actor has said a succession plan for the character is already in development. The strength of this weekend’s numbers makes it unlikely that Sony will move away from the 30-year-old star soon.
