“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is off to one of the biggest starts in box office history, with Thursday preview numbers already surpassing “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and industry insiders speculating the film could challenge “Avengers: Endgame’s” all-time preview record.
According to Deadline, the Tom Holland led sequel crossed $50 million in Thursday previews, topping “No Way Home’s” $50 million mark from 2021 and locking in the best previews in Sony’s history. That figure alone ranks as the third-best previews ever recorded, behind “Avengers: Endgame’s” $60 million in 2019 and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens'” $57 million in 2015.
The final number was still being counted as of Thursday night. The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit said a source told him the film was “having just a massive Thursday” and could generate $70 million or more, which would break Endgame’s record. Other outlets, including World of Reel, reported projections in the $65 million to $70 million range. The official preview figure is expected Friday morning, with the full opening weekend total to follow Sunday.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows Peter Parker navigating life after the world forgot his identity in “No Way Home,” reconnecting with MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) while facing a new telepathic threat. Sadie Sink joins the cast as Jean Grey, a mysterious new character whose appearance is widely seen as Marvel’s first concrete step toward introducing the X-Men into the MCU.
The film’s box office momentum extends internationally. Mexico logged roughly $7.3 million in early grosses through its Wednesday opening, part of a global rollout that has already pushed the film’s worldwide total past $100 million ahead of its full domestic release. The United Kingdom posted a $7.8 million opening day, while South Korea added $4.8 million and Italy $4.6 million.
Comic book legend Frank Miller, best known for his work on “The Dark Knight Returns” and “Daredevil,” gave the film a public endorsement this week, calling Holland “his forever Spider-Man” and praising the film’s fidelity to Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko’s original vision.
Domestic weekend projections have climbed throughout the week, with tracking services ranging from a conservative $195 million to bullish estimates near $300 million, according to Variety. The film carries a net production budget of $225 million.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” holds a 91% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes as of Thursday. The film opens against Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which has already crossed $700 million worldwide in its third weekend.
