A good girl falls in love with a secret villain? Say less.
Sadie is always falling for the liars and the cheats and the less-than-desirable. This time, though, she has fallen for Joan, her neighbor, who happens to be genuine and kind. Except Joan is actually the supervillain Spark. But Sadie does not have to know that. Right?
This was a… super romance. See what I did there? It was a cute, short romance set in the world of heroes and villains with extraordinary powers. Sadie and Joan were cute. Sadie, the effervescent, bubbly leading lady, was the perfect contrast to Joan’s black cat, just trying to do her best. They fell a bit quick for my liking, but this is a superhero world where society’s roles do not always apply. Plus, I mean, they are gay.
I also really fell in love with the side characters, the other heroes, villains and norms. With a book that falls under 300 pages, you would suspect that the secondary characters would not get fully fleshed out, but that was not the case. Between Mark, Perry, Zee, Greta, Amit… I know who they all are, and I want to know more. Particularly more on Mark and Zee, please.
This story poked holes in the world of superheroes. It asked the question: okay, but what about all those buildings and cars the supers destroy while “saving” the city? Turns out, the insurance goes way up. I thought this was a funny nod to these “normie” questions. And I appreciate the question of whether good is always good and evil is always evil. (Insert the “Wreck-It Ralph” scene here: “You are a bad guy, but this does not mean you are a bad guy.”)
