Sixteen states and several environmental groups filed lawsuits Thursday against the United States Postal Service over its decision to replace its existing mail delivery vehicles with thousands of gasoline-powered trucks.

The suits allege that the agency violated the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires federal agencies to assess the environmental impact of their proposed decisions.

Environmental advocates are calling for the USPS to adopt more battery electric vehicles as an alternative.
