Fans of “The Boys” have been eagerly anticipating a glimpse of Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy. Following yesterday’s shield tease, Entertainment Weekly has unveiled our first official look at the “Supernatural” actor in full costume as the world’s first “supe.”
To those who aren’t familiar with the comic adaptation of the character, Soldier Boy is a Captain America-esque figure and is the original superhero. He’s also the leader of his team Payback, which is the prerequisite of the seven in many ways.
The character of Soldier Boy does appear in the comic books, but this take on the character is expected to be quite a bit different, as further evidenced by the green outfit. The color change was to distinguish that this interpretation of the character is indeed a parody of Captain America.
However, it makes sense to have the costume in an emerald faint green tint instead of the iconic red, white, and blue, possibly because the iconic red, white, and blue would have been too on the nose. Due to this fact, the series is meant to be a satirical parody of established comic-book influence and lore while tackling real-life commentary through a fictional lens.

“Soldier Boy is the original badass,” The Boys costume designer Laura Jean Shannon exclaimed when asked about the casting “Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that.”
When the official confirmation occurred, showrunner Eric Kripke took to social media to announce his excitement surrounding fans who have been “quit clogging” his “Twitter notifications with demands” to see Soldier Boy, he added in his own playful statement.
Producer Eric Kripke, when speaking on the casting, added, “When I cast Jensen as Soldier Boy, the first thing I said was, ‘I’m most excited for you, because of the amazing process you’ll go through with LJ, our Super Suit designer.’ It took six months but the experience surpassed Jensen’s expectations,” he said. “LJ has made a work of art that tips its hat to the WWII Soldier Boy from the comics, while taking it in a sleek new direction. And if you think the photos are cool, just wait till you see Jensen in action. It’s one of my very favorite suits.”
Season 3, which is in production now, returns with Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Karen Fukuhara, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, and Doumit.
