Marvel Comics is marking Spider-Woman’s 50th anniversary with a new ongoing series that pushes Jessica Drew toward her darkest impulses yet.
According to a Marvel.com announcement, “Spider-Woman” no. 1 arrives Nov. 4 from writer Dan Watters (“Loki”) and artist Andrea Broccardo (“Spider-Man Noir”), with a cover by the artist Ito. The new series follows a key development set to occur in “Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity” no. 5 next month, in which Jessica Drew ends up in possession of one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains.
The publisher says the new book returns Jessica to her roots as a private investigator, pairing her with journalist Ben Urich to chase hidden threats through the seedier corners of the Marvel Universe. Marvel describes the series as pushing Jessica to embrace darker impulses as she investigates, with a bloodthirsty Carnage figuring into the danger she’s forced to confront.
Readers can get an early look at the creative team’s take on the character in “Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special” no. 1, on sale in September. That one-shot also includes a story from writer Ann Nocenti (“Daredevil”) and artist Stefano Raffaele (“Alien Vs. Captain America”).
Watters said he’s thrilled to continue the story he and Broccardo began in the anniversary special, adding that Jessica will chase leads too dangerous even for Daily Bugle reporters.
Broccardo described the new series as a shift from prior “Spider-Woman” runs, framing it as a detective noir story built around a life-altering force that reshapes Jessica’s approach to her cases. The artist said the book leans into horror and gore elements that are unusual for the character but that he finds creatively energizing. Broccardo also said Watters’ scripts render vividly enough that he can picture scenes, sounds and atmosphere while drawing them.
“Spider-Woman” no. 1 goes on sale Nov. 4 at local comic shops and through Marvel Unlimited digital redemption codes included with print copies.
