James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, dismissed Wonder Woman casting rumors over the weekend, saying “Man of Tomorrow” actor Frank Grillo reposted a fan-made poster of Adria Arjona as the hero only because it featured Grillo’s own photo.
Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr. in the DC Universe, shared the unofficial image on Instagram. It showed Arjona in a Wonder Woman costume alongside Blue Beetle, who has not been confirmed for the film. Fans read the post as an accidental confirmation of long-running speculation about Arjona’s role.
“Is this an accidental tease or should we not read anything into it?” one fan asked Gunn on Threads.
Gunn answered with a jab at his castmate.
“It’s Frank reposting somebody because it has his photo in it and he loves himself,” Gunn wrote. “I can assure you Frank doesn’t know who Adria is playing in the DCU and whether or not she has any sort of incredibly small cameo in ‘MoT’ or not. People have been making wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too much of this.”
When another commenter doubted that explanation, Gunn posted a text exchange with Grillo. “You’re killing me posting WW and Blue Beetle stuff,” Gunn wrote in the message. “You’re going to disappoint people so badly!”
Grillo replied that he had seen a “cool poster” and reshared it without thinking.
Arjona’s name has been tied to Wonder Woman since at least last summer. Gunn said in a July 1, 2025, interview with Extra that he follows her on Instagram, adding, “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly in June 2025 that a Wonder Woman film was “being written right now.”
The latest exchange settles only what Grillo knew. Gunn did not name Arjona’s character, confirm her as Wonder Woman or rule her out, and SuperHeroHype noted that his comments leave her role officially undisclosed.
DC Studios has not announced who will play Wonder Woman in the DC Universe.
