DC Universe’s next Superman film on track for 2027

Production on the follow-up to 2025's "Superman" is underway, with the film currently targeting a July 9, 2027, theatrical release. While leaked footage and photos have begun circulating online, the Daily Planet remains committed to reporting verified information rather than amplifying unauthorized material.

The next chapter of the DC Universe is moving forward at full speed.

James Gunn’s follow-up to “Superman” is currently filming and is scheduled to arrive in theaters July 9, 2027, almost exactly two years after the release of the first film. DC officially announced the project last year, confirming David Corenswet’s return as Clark Kent/Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s return as Lex Luthor.

DC Studios has revealed little about the film’s story, but production timelines offer clues about what fans can expect over the next year.

The original “Superman” filmed for approximately six months before entering a post-production period that lasted roughly a year. If the sequel follows a similar schedule, principal photography could continue through much of 2026 before visual effects work and editing take over heading into 2027.

That timeline places the sequel’s production squarely alongside this month’s release of “Supergirl,” which arrives in theaters June 26. Gunn has previously confirmed that “Supergirl” takes place chronologically between the events of “Superman” and the upcoming sequel, making Kara Zor-El’s story an important bridge between the two films.

The proximity of the two projects has fueled intense online speculation. In recent weeks, videos and photographs purportedly captured from the sequel’s sets have spread rapidly across social media, generating headlines and fan theories well before DC Studios has had any opportunity to formally unveil footage or story details.

The Daily Planet will not be participating in that cycle.

In June 2024, Editor-in-Chief Zack Benz published the editorial “Super sharing is super unethical,” laying out three reasons the publication would stop sharing unauthorized set material. The first was attribution: sharing photos the Daily Planet didn’t take, without proper credit front and center, is ethically irresponsible. The second was the spoiler problem itself, where grainy, context-free images obtained without permission are not the way any genuine fan wants to experience a new Superman film. The third was about integrity among media members: reposting someone else’s photo without credentials isn’t scooping, it’s stealing.

That position has not changed.

Film sets have always attracted attention, particularly when Superman is involved. Fans naturally want to know what comes next. But there is a difference between reporting confirmed developments and amplifying material that may have been obtained without permission or context.

For now, the most reliable information remains what DC has confirmed: “Supergirl” arrives this month, the next Superman film is in production and the DC Universe’s flagship hero is expected back in theaters July 9, 2027. Everything else can wait until the story is ready to be told.
