FARIBAULT, MN — The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, December 2, to discuss several upcoming changes at Allina Health Faribault Medical Center that may impact local families and patients.
According to a filing with MDH, the hospital’s birth center will close on December 1, and all labor and delivery services will be consolidated to Owatonna Hospital. Additionally, emergency surgical coverage will no longer be available during evenings and weekends starting on that same date. Beginning May 7, 2026, the hospital will also cease admitting pediatric patients.
The hearing aims to provide the community with an opportunity to comment on these changes. It will take place in-person at the hospital’s lower-level conference room (200 State Ave, Faribault) and virtually via Microsoft Teams. Residents can join online through the event page or by phone at 651-395-7448 using access code 522 391 020#.
This hearing is a legal requirement under Minnesota Statutes 144.555, enacted by the state Legislature in 2021. This statute mandates public notice and a hearing before a hospital can close services, relocate care, or discontinue certain services. MDH encourages residents to submit comments in advance or during the session.
Consolidation of hospital services, particularly in maternity, pediatric, and emergency care, has raised concerns in other Minnesota communities. Local advocates and families are invited to attend the hearing to discuss potential impacts, such as travel times for patients and access to critical care.
Residents seeking more information about the hearing, accessibility accommodations, or how to submit public comment can visit the Allina Health Faribault Medical Center Public Hearing webpage on the MDH website.
