Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said officers heard two bursts of automatic gunfire around 2:38 a.m. near 5th Street Southeast and 13th Avenue Southeast. When they arrived, officers found two males with gunshot wounds at the intersection and a third victim in an alley behind 1235 4th Street Southeast.
Police administered CPR and applied a tourniquet to one of the victims before paramedics arrived. One male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. An adult male and a juvenile male were taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Three firearms were recovered, including a handgun found near the deceased victim. Investigators are still working to determine who possessed the other two guns and what prompted the shooting.
“This was a very chaotic and dangerous situation, and I commend the officers who ran toward the gunfire in an effort to save lives,” O’Hara said in a statement. “We want students, parents, and residents to know that they will see an immediate increase in police presence in this area.”
Forensic scientists processed the scene and collected evidence. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video, canvassing the area, conducting interviews, and following up on leads.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the deceased’s identity along with the official cause and manner of death.
