MINNEAPOLIS— A Texas man has been indicted for escape from federal custody, according to U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger.
On Oct. 11, 2024, Ismael Benavidez, 48, was in the custody of the Bureau of Prisons at the Volunteers of America Residential Reentry Center in Minnesota when he left without permission.
He was serving a 40-month sentence and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to Conspiracy to Harbor Illegal Aliens on Oct. 25, 2018, in Texas.
The indictment includes one count of escape. At his arraignment yesterday in U.S. District Court, Magistrate Judge Dulce J. Foster ordered Benavidez held until further proceedings.
This case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Evan B. Gilead prosecuting.
