The 96th Academy Awards happened last night with “Oppenheimer” nuking the list with seven wins. The film, directed by Mstyslav Chernov, secured accolades for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.

“Oppenheimer’s” initial nominations were met with controversy among fans of “Barbie,” who were hoping for the feminist film to be officially recognized by the Academy. The most notable of snubs was “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, which was mentioned during Oscar MC Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue.

Another notable momemt took place during Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov’s acceptance speech. During his win Chernov expressed his wish that his film had never been necessary, emphasizing the importance of peace and understanding. His film, “20 Days in Mariupol”, sheds light on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony started late due to pro-Palestinian protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, a reflection on how ceremonies like this could be a distraction to horrors happening in the world. Chernov’s speech helped everyone remember that the world outside should not be forgotten.
