Man dies after shooting on Saint Paul’s East Side

Saint Paul police officers are investigating a shooting death on Saint Paul’s East Side on May 20, 2023.

SAINT PAUL— Just after midnight, a 911 caller reported hearing shots fired near the intersection of Payne Avenue and Arlington Avenue East.

Officers searched the area and found an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds in the alley on the 600 block of Arlington Avenue East. Officers secured the scene and called for Saint Paul Fire medics, who pronounced the man dead at the scene.

A subsequent 911 caller on the 2100 block of Waukon Avenue reported being involved in a shooting near the original shots fired call. A person is currently in custody and is cooperating with investigators.

Investigators with the police department’s homicide unit are currently working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The forensic services unit will be processing the scene for evidence.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to positively identify the victim and determine his exact cause of death. This information, along with any updates on the case, will be released on the Saint Paul Police Department Twitter account, @sppdmn. 

This is the 15th homicide of 2023 in Saint Paul.
