Former President Donald Trump has officially announced his bid for the White House during a rally in Mar-a-Lago, the very city where the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his estate to recover sensitive classified documents.
“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for President of the United States,” said Trump.
His pledge to run ignores the appeals of numerous Republicans who continue to warn that his continued influence on the party is largely to blame for its weaker-than-expected representation in the midterm elections.
According to The New York Times, a main driving force for Trump’s intended candidacy is the former president’s hope that it will shield him from the multiple ongoing state and federal investigations.
Trump is currently facing repercussions for possessing classified documents, his involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection, election interference in Georgia, business and financial woes, among others.
Trump has filed FEC paperwork to properly affirm his candidacy for the presidency in 2024,
