People took to the streets on Wednesday to demonstrate against a court ruling which effectively bans abortion in Poland. The implementation of the October 2020 ruling — which came into effect on Wednesday and bans termination of pregnancies with fetal defects — was delayed earlier as it prompted nationwide protests.
Poland already had one of Europe’s most restrictive abortion laws, with the procedure legal in only three instances: fetal abnormalities, pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, and threats to a woman’s life. The latter two remain legal. Demonstrators took to the streets to protest the near-total ban on Wednesday.
