Marvel Studios released the first official trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday” on Monday, delivering the footage fans have anticipated for months and offering the clearest look yet at Robert Downey Jr.’s turn as the villainous Doctor Doom.
The trailer’s release comes days ahead of Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, scheduled for Saturday, where the Russo Brothers and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige are expected to appear alongside cast members to preview the studio’s upcoming slate.
“Avengers: Doomsday” has been described by fans and industry watchers alike as the most anticipated film of the year. Marvel’s first Avengers: Doomsday trailer allows fans to see Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom for the first time, a reveal years in the making since Downey departed the franchise as Tony Stark or Iron Man in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
The footage largely mirrors what was shown to audiences at CinemaCon in April. However, the version released Monday includes several standout moments: Gambit fighting Shang-Chi, Yelena battling multiple versions of herself before one is revealed to be Mystique, and Thor facing off against Doctor Doom, who catches Stormbreaker with one hand. The Stormbreaker moment has drawn comparisons to Thor’s failed attempt to stop Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War.”
The trailer closes on Steve Rogers reuniting with Thor, though the character appears notably different than in past appearances, sporting long hair and a beard that has fans speculating about which version of Captain America they are seeing.
According to the official synopsis, the film brings heroes from three distinct universes onto a collision course against an existential threat unlike anything they have faced before. Feige has previously said the story draws on Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers comic run, which explored colliding Earths and alternate timelines, allowing the film to bring together characters from the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the core Marvel Cinematic Universe into a single crossover.

The film’s cast is among the largest in franchise history. Confirmed stars include Downey, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Wyatt Russell, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Quinn, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman, Kelsey Grammer, Kathryn Newton, Danny Ramirez, Winston Duke, Alan Cumming, Hannah John-Kamen, Rebecca Romijn, Alex Livinalli, Mabel Cadena and Tenoch Huerta Mejia. Ryan Reynolds is also reported to reprise his role as Wade Wilson, or Deadpool.
Production on the film wrapped in September 2025 after principal photography ran from April to September at Pinewood Studios in England. On certain shoot days, between 30 and 35 actors were on set simultaneously, a scale Feige called unprecedented even by Marvel standards. The production also reused original sets from the early 2000s “X-Men” film series to reinforce visual continuity with that franchise’s return to the Marvel fold.
“Avengers: Doomsday” is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously helmed “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” The screenplay is credited to Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, based on “The Avengers” characters created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Kevin Feige produces alongside the Russo brothers through their AGBO banner. Newton Thomas Sigel serves as cinematographer, Jeffrey Ford as editor and Alan Silvestri returns to compose the score. The film is produced by Marvel Studios and AGBO and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
The film carries an official runtime of 165 minutes, longer than “Infinity War” but shorter than “Endgame.” Tickets went on sale this week, five months ahead of release, though initially only for Infinity Vision theaters, a new large-format designation Disney created for select “Doomsday” screens.
“Avengers: Doomsday” opens in theaters Dec. 18, ahead of its follow-up, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” slated for Dec. 17, 2027.
