‘Jimmy Olsen’ HBO series moves into production, eyes August start in Atlanta

DC Studios' long-gestating Jimmy Olsen series, which also doubles as a Gorilla Grodd project, is heading into production this August in Atlanta, with Skyler Gisondo reprising his "Superman" role and casting underway for the show's villainous co-lead.

Nearly a year after it was first announced, DC Studios’ Jimmy Olsen series is finally moving into pre-production, with filming now targeted for late August through October in Atlanta, according to a report from Nexus Point News.

The series centers on Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen in a true crime documentary format, following the character as he investigates different villains in the DC Universe.

Production was originally expected to overlap with “Man of Tomorrow,” but budgetary reasons delayed the series’ greenlight, pushing the shoot so it now begins right as that production wraps. HBO has confirmed filming would begin this year if officially picked up, though the network declined further comment.

Casting is currently underway for the project’s co-lead, Gorilla Grodd, with comedic actors reportedly in the mix for the voiceover role, and a separate lawyer role also being cast amid speculation of a Grodd-on-trial storyline.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn addressed fan speculation about the project’s direction directly earlier this month, writing that “it didn’t become anything. It is what it’s always been.” Gunn added: “It’s both a Jimmy Olsen AND a Gorilla Grodd show.”

Co-CEO Peter Safran first confirmed the show was nearing production in a mid-June interview, saying, “We’ve talked about the Gorilla Grodd show for HBO that we’ll start shooting this year.”

Earlier reporting indicated Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and David Corenswet’s Clark Kent are not expected to appear, keeping the story focused on Jimmy and the Daily Planet newsroom.
