MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Minneapolis police officers reported coming under gunfire Monday afternoon near the intersection of 36th Avenue North and Penn Avenue North, prompting a large-scale search for a suspect and temporary shelter-in-place alerts for nearby residents.
According to the Minneapolis Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. while officers were patrolling the area. Police said shots were fired from a nearby vehicle in the direction of officers.
No officers were injured and no police vehicles were struck by the gunfire. Authorities said officers did not return fire.
The incident triggered a significant law enforcement response involving personnel from all MPD precincts and several partner agencies. Officers searched the area for a suspect described as a Black male in his late teens who was reportedly wearing a pink sweatshirt.
As the search unfolded, authorities issued shelter-in-place and avoid-the-area alerts for residents and businesses near the scene. The alerts were later lifted after the search concluded.
Police said there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to the public.
The MPD Major Crimes Division and Forensics Unit responded to process the scene and collect evidence. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the sequence of events that led to the incident.
No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday.
