"Man of Tomorrow," the DC Universe sequel to 2025's blockbuster "Superman," began production this week in Atlanta, with director James Gunn confirming the news via social media alongside a cryptic first look from set.

James Gunn took to social media Sunday to confirm that cameras are rolling on “Man of Tomorrow,” posting a behind-the-scenes image captioned “From the set of #ManofTomorrow. Shooting now.” The image revealed a chessboard, a Lex Luthor inmate ID and what appears to be a box bearing the Brainiac logo, details that hint at an early scene in which Superman visits his imprisoned nemesis to recruit him against a greater threat.

Filming officially began April 17 in Atlanta under the working title “Exodus,” with principal photography set to continue through mid-2026 at locations including Macon, Cincinnati and the United Kingdom.

The first “Superman” relaunched the Warner Bros.-owned DC Universe last summer, earning above $600 million at the global box office to stand as the year’s highest-grossing superhero film. The sequel is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.

Gunn wrote and is directing the film. David Corenswet returns as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with Rachel Brosnahan reprising her role as Lois Lane and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Lars Eidinger joins as the film’s central villain, Brainiac, with Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer also returning.

Aaron Pierre brings his Green Lantern character John Stewart to the film, debuting the role in the upcoming HBO series “Lanterns” before crossing over to the big screen.

Adria Arjona has also joined the cast, reportedly as Maxima, following a competitive screen testing process that drew significant speculation. Gunn has not officially confirmed the role, and some have speculated she may actually be playing Wonder Woman.

Gunn has described “Man of Tomorrow” as “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” with the pair working together against Brainiac, described as a much larger threat than either has faced before. A logo glimpsed on the production clapperboard appears to merge Superman’s and Brainiac’s symbols, suggesting the two figures will be intertwined throughout the story.

Before “Man of Tomorrow” arrives, DC has two additional films on the way: “Supergirl” in June and “Clayface” in October of this year, along with “The Batman Part II” also slated for 2027.
