DC Studios’ Sgt. Rock film no longer moving forward

On April 30, an official report from THR revealed that the SGT. Rock film from director Luca Guadagnino (“Challengers“) has been canceled and shelved indefinitely and will be removed from the DC Studios theatrical slate. This is ahead of Superman (2025), which is set to land in theaters this summer on July 11th. 

It should be reiterated before the films eventual delay being announced the project did make a small emergence as various trades confirmed the attachment of actor Colin Farrell (Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” “The Penguin“) being cast as the lead himself of Rock, due to actor Daniel Craig (“No Time to Die,” “Queer”) leaving the project opening the door for Farrell, along with the consensus that cameras were set to begin rolling relatively shortly this upcoming summer in England. 

Reports paint the perspective that DC has a sense of strong faith towards the film finding placement among an ever-shifting DCU slate due to the project’s scribe Justin Kuritzkes, who has worked prior with Guadagnino from their collaboration on “Challengers.” However, according to additional reports from Deadline, the film could still be fast-tracked to restart production in 2026. 

According to Deadline, “Insiders cite a tight outdoor filming schedule with uncertain weather conditions ahead of an August start date as the reason for the project’s shelved status.” Of course, those plans have now changed and are on the proverbial back burner until further notice emerges. Another insider points to the direction that Guadagnino was losing interest in the prospect of helming a ‘comic book movie’, and the reported budget was in the ballpark, close to a number upward to $70 million – a much lower and stable budget from the likes of which have ballooned and felt out creative focus among the general public and fans alike. 

To add, a plethora of details connected to the film were released via THR, “it was noted by the that the film was well into the casting process, trying to line up actors who would play the men of Easy Company, the combat unit who fought the Nazi forces in Europe.”  The trade also revealed that actor Mike Faist(Challengers) was lined up for a role, but it was never noted for whom. 

In addition reports do offer a small sample of a potential narrative, which said “the story is said to involve Rock teaming with up with the female French resistance fighter (are there any other kind?) to find the mystical Spear of Destiny, the spear used to stab Jesus Christ during his crucifixion and in lore is said to have supernatural properties, before the Nazis get their hands on it.” Giving a point of an enjoyable retread, building the foundation for the seamless harmony of an Indiana Jones and Captain America concoction, possibly in the works with a broader opportunity to invoke human emotion under the guise of a war-torn character study within the life of the DCU.

Furthering cementing a lingering link for DC’s prototypical attempt to tackle the mid century point of the 20th century, where Marvel Studios found moderate critical success with the war-torn era MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) phase 1 film “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011) which lit the match paving the road for which Chris Evan walked until his time ended as the character of Captain America/Steve Rodgers in “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).  

First DCU appearance

The character of SGT. Rock made his DCU debut via an appearance on EP 3 of “Creature Commandos” (2025), ‘Cheers to the Tin Man’, voiced by Maury Sterling, in a small and brief cameo that offered a minimal appetizer for the amount of worldbuilding Gunn keeps celebrating with the DC comic sandbox at his disposal.  

All eyes on Superman

Next up for DC is “Superman” stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as star-studded Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as photographer Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Nicholas Hoult as classic antagonist Lex Luthor, Neva Howell as Marhta Kent, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan “Pa” Kent, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

The cast also includes Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.
