SAINT LOUIS PARK— City officials at Saint Louis Park have received concerns from residents who are bothered by train horns and noise at night.
The Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Railway, also known as the “Dan Patch line,” travels north to south through St. Louis Park and nearby communities. In late summer 2024, CPKC trains started running overnight on this route.
City staff contacted CPKC, which explained that its trains run at night to meet customer needs and that it does not plan to switch back to daytime operations.
“While we understand this is a new and unwelcome disruption, neither the city nor the state has the authority to tell the railroad when or how they can operate,” City officials said in a released statement. “Railroads are regulated at the federal level, including a safety regulation requiring crews to sound locomotive horns at crossings.”
Saint Louis Park officials are looking into creating quiet or “whistle-free zones” near railway tracks where trains wouldn’t have to blow their whistles. However, even if some crossings in St. Louis Park are considered suitable, establishing these zones will take many years to study and implement.
