MINNEAPOLIS— The 2023 Open Streets season kicks off this Saturday, June 10, with Open Streets East Lake Street. The event will span from Second Avenue South to 22nd Avenue South on East Lake Street.

The street will be closed to vehicle traffic from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving people the chance to enjoy East Lake Street in a car-free environment. You can play, eat, bike, walk, dance, sing and much more at this family friendly event. More than a street festival, Open Streets East Lake allows neighbors to experience city streets as public spaces where communities thrive.

Public Works launches As You Go MPLS mode-shift campaign

Visit the City of Minneapolis Public Works Department’s table at East Lake Street and Second Avenue during Open Streets East Lake Street to learn about the new As You Go MPLS mode-shift marketing campaign. Public Works, in collaboration with the City’s Communications Department, is launching a multi-year mode-shift marketing effort designed to encourage people to leave their personal vehicle at home and try walking, biking, rolling or taking transit for more of their daily trips.

The campaign supports the City’s Transportation Action Plan, which includes a goal of having 60% of trips in Minneapolis taken by walking, biking, or transit by 2030. The first campaign of the As You Go MPLS program will focus on establishing brand awareness and encouraging Minneapolis residents who are open to walking, biking, and/or public transit, to try those travel modes in low-stress situations to overcome the initial hurdles of familiarity and awareness.

Campaign partner Metro Transit will be at the I-35W & Lake Street Station throughout Saturday’s Open Streets event to share information about the METRO B Line, a new Bus Rapid Transit line that will serve the Lake Street corridor, the Transit Assistance Program, and ongoing hiring and public safety efforts. Visit the station any time during Open Streets to participate in an artist-guided mural painting at the station.

Lime, Spin and Veo – participants in the City’s 2023 Shared Bike and Scooter Program – will also be at Open Streets East Lake Street, offering free bike and scooter demos.
