Mutinous soldiers declared Monday on state television that a military junta is seizing power in Burkina Faso after they detained President Roch Kabore.

They also announced that they suspended the constitution, closed borders and dissolved the parliament. The democratically-elected president has resigned.

This comes after soldiers staged mutinies at several army barracks on Sunday and heavy gunfire was reported around the president’s residence in the capital Ouagadougou.
