After months of negotiations, the UK and the EU have agreed on a post-Brexit trade deal days before the deadline, which would come into place on January 1. The trade agreement will have to be approved by the UK and EU parliaments.
The UK left the EU in January 2020, but remained under the transition period until Dec. 31. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Friday that the UK “completed the biggest trade deal yet.” EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “It is fair, it is a balanced deal, it is the right thing to do for both sides.” The full text of the trade agreement is yet to be published, with EU ambassadors and UK parliamentarians meeting over the festive period to review it.
