DC FanDome: Highlights from the first event

The ultimate 24-hour experience for the world’s greatest fans is finally here. Fans from all seven continents have been streaming the largest gathering of talent, announcements and content reveals in the history of DC Comics.

On Saturday, August 22, starting at 10 a.m. PDT, Warner Bros. welcomed fans everywhere into the DC FanDome — a free virtual fan experience where no badge was required, hosted by Aisha Tyler with multiple cohosts from around the planet.

Wonder Woman 1984

Director Patty Jenkins was joined by Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Kristen Wig (Cheetah), Pedro Pascal (Max Lord) and Wonder Woman alum, Lynda Carter.

The actors and director answered fan questions, participated in discussions and thanked fans for their patience with the films delayed premier during the pandemic.

The panel also released a mind blowing new trailer, complete with first looks at Kristen Wig as Cheetah.

Justice League

Zack Snyder’s Justice League has been making international headlines for what seems like forever, fittingly so. This fan driven revival will see the directors cut of Justice League appearing on Warner Bros. streaming service, HBO Max.

The film’s rebirth was sparked soon after it’s initial release in theaters in 2017. Some fans were disappointed in the final cut after Avengers Director, Joss Whedon, took the reigns from Zack Snyder. Snyder had to step down due to personal family reasons.

Fans were exceedingly pleased to see a preview of Zack Snyder’s interpretation in this new teaser trailer. Zack Snyder’s Justice League will premier on HBO Max in 2021.

The Suicide Squad movie

During the Suicide Squad panel the entire talent list for the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ movie was released, along with an incredible teaser trailer.

Viola Davis returns as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie will once again play Harley, Jai Courtney will appear as Captain Boomerang and Joel kinsman will reprise Rick flag. The entire squad is listed below.

Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, will be directing the film. Gunn compared his Suicide Squad to “The Dirty Dozen,” stating this new DC installment is unlike any superhero film in history.

The Suicide Squad game

Much like the comics, this Suicide Squad sees Task Force-X performing deeds to earn leniency on their sentence under the watchful eye of Amanda Waller. Taking place in the idyllic city of tomorrow (Metropolis), this game follows the storyline of Rocksteady’s Arkham series.

Black Adam

During this brief panel, Dwayne Johnson teased his long-in-development Black Adam film.

Johnson revealed that, in addition to seeing Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, we’ll also be seeing the legendary Justice Society of America (JSA).

The Flash show

CW’s The Flash, along with the rest of the networks superhero series’, was announced as multiversal cannon. Confirmation on Grant Gustin’s version of the character naming Ezra Miller’s doppelgänger was also made.

Showrunner Eric Wallacejoined cast members Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Nicolet, Danielle Panabaker, Brandon McKnight and Kayla Compton all sat in on the panel to discuss the show.

The Flash’s previous season was cut short due to the pandemic.

The teaser picks up from season 6 where Iris West (Candice Patton) was left trapped inside a mirrorverse facing survival and total madness.

During a comedic styled panel, Ezra Miller (Barry Allen), along with other show runners for the upcoming ‘Flashpoint’ film, revealed much about the movie.

‘The Flash’ Will Feature the Birth of the Cinematic Multiverse, and Batman Makes Barry Allen a New Suit

DC FanDome

It and It Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti, his sister and producer Barbara Muschietti, writer Christina Hodson and actor Ezra Miller all spoke of the upcoming cinematic experience with total elation.

Time travel and origin stories will play an integral part in this new blockbuster. The film will draw creative inspiration from DC Comics “Flashpoint” storyline. Production has yet to be started.

Multiverse 101

Multiverse 101, where the ever expanding and destructive multiverse was the main topic of discussion, was hosted by Tiffany Smith. 

Smith was joined by Jim Lee (President of DC), Walter Hamada (Director of ‘Joker’ and ‘Aquaman’) and Greg Berlanti (Producer of DC’s CW shows)

Earth-2 is Stargirl, Earth-12 belongs to Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern, Earth-19 is where Swamp-Thing resides, Earth-9 is Titans planet, Earth-21 is Doom Patrol, Earth-96 is where Kingdom Come Superman (Brandom Routh) lives and Earth-Prime is the combined post-Crisis CW-verse.

DC Universe’s ‘Titans’

The digital streaming service, DC Universe, saw one of its more popular original series previewed during a DC FanDome panel Saturday. Stars joined in on discussing their favorite moments, talked plot lines and hinted at future events yet to unfold, including Jason Todd becoming the Red Hood.

Gotham Knights

Gotham Knights is a new explosive title from Warner Bros Montreal. It is slated for release in 2021. Fans can play as Red Hood, Robin, Nightwing And Batgirl. Batman is confirmed to be dead.

It is still unknown if ‘Gotham Knights’ is connected to the Arkham series or if the new title is a soft reboot of the hit franchise. One thing to take away was the inclusion of the Court of Owls and the expansive map and similar gameplay to ‘Marvels Avengers,’ which is slated to drop on Sept. 4, 2020.

The Batman

Matt Reeves highly anticipated “The Batman” title was officially announced as a stand alone film, existing separately from DC’s already existing titles.

Matt Reeve’s discussed much during the closing panel. He talked the overall cinematic tone of the picture, revealed some interesting plot points and revealed the first official look at the movie.

The Batman will not be an origin story. Instead Batman must struggle with enemies while still learning his way around the cape and cowl.

Reeves said that the nature of Gotham is critical to the story. Matt Reeves wanted to flesh out an American city we have never been to before. While Burton and Nolan had their versions, this is a version will be one fans haven’t seen before. More coverage of ‘The Batman’ will be coming later this week.

Matt Reeves stated that only 25 to 30 percent of ‘The Batman’ has wrapped filming.

Other highlights

Shazam’s sequel title was announced during a brief panel with stars from the first hit film. The sequel will be titled “Shazam: Fury of the Gods.” The movie is set to be released on Nov. 4, 2022.

Some teases regarding Aquaman’s sequel were also hinted at during a short panel.

“The movie will be a little bit more serious, a little bit more relevant to the world that we’re living in today,” Aquaman Director James Wan stated. The movie is currently scheduled to be released in 2022.

Hall of Heroes streamed live on Saturday Aug. 22, 2020. The remainder of DC FanDome is scheduled for next month.
