New Jimmy Olsen show reportedly in early development at DC Studios

A spinoff focused on Superman’s longtime ally and colleague, Jimmy Olsen, is reportedly being developed by DC Studios, but it’s far from official. Industry outlets say the project remains in the early planning phase, with no title, release date or confirmed creative team finalized.

The proposed series would mark the first time Jimmy Olsen, one of DC’s oldest supporting characters, headlines his own live-action production.

According to reports from TVLine and UPI, the show is being considered under the guidance of DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, following Olsen’s introduction in this past Summer’s “Superman” film.

Skyler Gisondo, who plays Jimmy in Gunn’s “Superman,” is expected to reprise the role if the project advances. Writers Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, known for Netflix’s “American Vandal,” are reportedly attached to develop the show, although discussions are still in the preliminary stages.

Early outlines suggest that the series will follow Olsen as he investigates metahuman activity. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gorilla Grodd, the telepathic DC villain often associated with The Flash, could appear as an antagonist. However, these details have not been fully confirmed by DC Studios.

If greenlit, the project would be part of a growing slate of interconnected DC Universe titles being developed by Gunn and Safran. It’s important to note that being “in development” does not guarantee that the series will move forward, as scripts, tone, and casting might change before any official announcement is made.

Jimmy Olsen has been a constant presence in Superman’s universe, often depicted as the relatable observer, an intrepid photojournalist who captures the truth through his camera lens. If the series is fully approved, it could provide a grounded perspective within DC’s evolving film and television lineup, as well as offer a great commentary on journalism as a whole.
