‘Smurfs’ — Big-hearted, beautifully made, and joyfully entertaining

1 min read

You know those films that make you feel like a kid again? “Smurfs (2025) is precisely that — an explosion of color, chaos, charm, and all things blue.

Directed by Chris Miller, this latest outing in Smurf Village is not just a nostalgia trip — it’s a vibrant, imaginative, and flat-out fun film that gets it right for both kids and the grown-ups who brought them to the theater.

The story is simple yet surprisingly creative — full of heart, humour, and just enough edge to keep things exciting. The film finds Smurfette (voiced by Robyn Fenty aka Rihanna) on a wild journey of self-discovery, surrounded by an ensemble of wonderfully voiced characters that breathe new life into these classic icons. The voice cast is honestly out of this world. Everyone nails it. There’s a rhythm to the performances that matches the film’s energy.

And speaking of rhythm — the music? Absolute fire. Rihanna doesn’t just lend her voice; she lends her sound. The songs are bouncy, fresh, and perfectly woven into the narrative, making the film as much a musical vibe as it is an animated spectacle. Kids in my screening were dancing in their seats, and truth be told, so was I.

Chris Miller’s direction keeps things moving at a smooth, steady pace. There are no dull moments here—the jokes land, the emotions connect, and the visuals are nothing short of stunning. A certain modern gloss to the animation makes every scene pop. From magical forests to candy-coloured villages, it’s pure eye-candy without ever feeling too busy.

Also, let’s say there are a couple of surprises packed that you do not want spoiled. I was genuinely shocked – in the best way.

“Smurfs” (2025) may be made for kids, but it respects the intelligence and attention of all ages. It’s the kind of movie we’ve been missing in cinema — big-hearted, beautifully made, and joyfully entertaining. Whether you’re discovering Smurfs for the first time or coming back to them after years, this one’s got something for you.
