Great Caesar’s Ghost, the chemistry is off the charts between Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet in Entertainment Weekly’s “Superman” feature published today.

Dial “S” for Super, because the promotional materials shared in this article have us excited to watch one of America’s favorite couples interacting in a universe inhabited by DC Comics characters.

The world is about to meet a new Man of Steel.

James Gunn’s upcoming film “Superman,” set to debut in theaters on July 11, 2025, will officially usher in a new chapter for DC Studios—one that reimagines iconic characters while laying the groundwork for a broader cinematic universe.

David Corenswet flies into the role of Clark Kent/Kal-El, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film marks the beginning of Gunn’s “Gods and Monsters” initiative, part of an ambitious overhaul designed to restore character-driven storytelling to the heart of superhero cinema, as he explained it.

A brighter Superman for a darker world

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn described this Superman as a beacon of hope. “He’s the kind of guy who would help a cat out of a tree—and mean it,” he said. Unlike recent interpretations that leaned into moral ambiguity, Corenswet’s Superman will navigate a cynical world without sacrificing integrity or kindness, according to Gunn.

“There’s some Venn diagram of our physical characteristics that lends itself to a hero who doesn’t wear a mask,” Corenswet added, alluding to his visual similarities to past Supermen, including Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill.

A redefined Lex Luthor

Hoult’s Lex Luthor, meanwhile, is being positioned as a tech mogul and power broker and not just a mad scientist. In this iteration, Luthor represents a challenge to Superman not only in intellect, but in ideology—driven by ambition and a desire to control rather than protect.

Gunn hinted that Luthor may be working behind the scenes to engineer adversaries like Ultra Man, introducing deeper threats into the new DCU.

Building toward a new DC Universe

The film won’t be a standalone story. While Superman centers on Clark’s dual identity as a reporter and hero, it will also introduce characters such as Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), laying the foundation for future titles.

“There is no Justice League in this world—not yet,” Gunn said, confirming that the team’s formation is still years away. However, he noted that the seeds are being planted.

A post-credits scene will also feature in the film. “My philosophy is that you want post-credit scenes to surprise or entertain audiences, not just set up future projects,” Gunn said.

Superman will be the first film in a larger slate that includes “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” a new Batman film (“The Brave and the Bold”), and series such as “Paradise Lost,” centered on the origins of the Amazons.

A cinematic reset with familiar heart

Gunn emphasized that while the new DCU will introduce unfamiliar characters and stories, Superman remains its cornerstone.

“Truth, justice, and a better tomorrow” is more than just a tagline—it’s a promise that this Superman intends to keep.

“Superman,” the first feature film from DC Studios, will be released this summer by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Directed by James Gunn, the film offers a new take on the iconic superhero, blending action, humor, and heart, featuring a Superman who believes in the goodness of people. Produced by Peter Safran and Gunn, the film is based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

David Corenswet plays Superman/Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan stars as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult portrays Lex Luthor. The cast also includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell. Executive producers are Nikolas Korda, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars Winther.

Gunn collaborates with a team that includes cinematographer Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, costume designer Judianna Makovsky, composer John Murphy, and editors Craig Alpert, Jason Ballantine, and William Hoy.

“Superman” will be in theaters and IMAX nationwide on July 11, 2025.
