DC has announced a new five-issue comic book series titled “Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton,” written by Ryan North and illustrated by Mike Norton, as part of their “Summer of Superman” publishing initiative.

This series will start on June 18, 2025, and will explore humanity—both its good and bad sides—through the eyes of a poor, lost dog with superpowers.

“Krypto’s origin has typically been presented at a high level,” said writer Ryan North. “He starts on Krypton, ends up on Earth, and assists Superman in fighting crime. The opportunity to truly define Krypto—to show what a little lost dog would experience when landing on a strange alien world called Earth—was very enticing. I also loved the idea of treating Krypto as the actual dog he is: he doesn’t talk, and we don’t cheat by reading his thoughts through speech balloons. Mike Norton’s art perfectly captures what needs to be conveyed in every scene. Krypto expresses who he is and how he feels like all dogs do—through his expressions, behavior, body language, barks, snuggles, licks, and sighs. Dogs are incredibly expressive animals, and we adore them. I wanted to tell a story that truly honors these animals—Krypto in particular.”

The project is set to be published before the July release of the new Superman movie, which features Krypto prominently.

“I’m always excited to draw more dogs in comics,” added artist Mike Norton. “Krypto is a dream project!”

“Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton” begins by chronicling Krypto’s journey on the planet Krypton. Jor-El and Lara are working on a spacecraft designed to keep someone alive in interstellar space. However, during their first test—with Krypto inside—the mission goes catastrophically wrong, leading them to believe the dog is lost. Unbeknownst to them, Krypto and his spacecraft merely enter an unexpected space-time gateway. Days later, from Krypto’s perspective—even though decades have passed in real time—he lands on Earth.

Throughout the five issues of “Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton,” Krypto explores Earth in search of his family. Feeling lost and alone in this alien world—and discovering strange new superpowers—Krypto travels across the planet, always on the trail of his lost friend, Kal-El, better known as Superman.

“Each issue of this miniseries is a complete short story that combines to tell the full narrative of Krypto the Superdog,” North explained. “Through these stories, we see Krypto face a strange new world as he travels from town to town, meeting and befriending people. Sometimes, he helps them solve their problems, and at other times, he encounters challenges of his own. He’s a very good dog.”

“Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton” no.1, written by Ryan North with art by Mike Norton and colors by Ian Herring, is scheduled for release on June 18, 2025. It will feature a main cover by Jae Lee and a variant cover by Dustin Nguyen. Be sure to visit your local comic book shop to preorder “Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton” no.1 and add this exciting new five-issue series to your pull list.

“Even in the face of evil, Krypto never gives up hope,” North said. “He is strong and brave—brave enough to be kind.”
