Multiple fatalities reported following two explosions outside Kabul airport

In a statement on Thursday, the Pentagon press secretary confirmed the two explosions outside Kabul Airport were the “result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US and civilian casualties.”

A Taliban spokesperson confirmed 13 people, including children, have died. According to the BBC, one explosion was a suicide bombing near to the closed Abbey Gate where British troops had been stationed.

The second explosion was close to the Baron Hotel, the Pentagon press secretary added.

The explosion has occurred at the Abbey gate entrance where British troops have been stationed in recent days. It was one of three gates that had been closed followings warnings of a terrorist threat.

A US official has told Reuters news agency the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber. The White House has confirmed that President Biden has been briefed on developments.
