A stampede at a religious festival attended by tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel killed at least 44 people and injured about 150, medical officials said.

More than 40 people have been killed and another 38 are in critical conditions, according to local media and authorities, after a stampede broke out at a Lag Ba’omer event in northern Israel.

Tens of thousands of people were gathering at Mount Meron to celebrate the Jewish religious holiday. An injured man said the crush of people caused a “general bedlam.”
