Zazie Beetz shines in ‘They Will Kill You’

2 mins read

I was introduced to Zazie Beetz’s Hornet in “Bullet Train,” and from there, it’s only been uphill. So when I saw her on the poster for “They Will Kill You,” I knew I was in for a treat.

Going in blind, I expected a straightforward horror film, maybe something with a bit of action sprinkled in. But “They Will Kill You” had other plans. What unfolds is a sharply entertaining blend of comedy, action, and thriller, with horror elements woven in just enough to keep you on edge. Yes, parts of it feel predictable, but the film leans into that familiarity and elevates it through execution, timing and sheer personality.

The story follows Asia Reaves, an ex-convict who takes up a housekeeping job in a luxurious New York high-rise called the Virgil, only to discover that the building is home to a satanic cult that preys on people like her. What starts as a simple job quickly spirals into a night of survival, as she fights her way through floors filled with increasingly unhinged residents, all while trying to find and save her sister.

What really works is how the film unfolds. The non-linear storytelling, cutting between past and present, adds layers to both the narrative and the characters. It’s not trying to outsmart you. It’s trying to entertain you while revealing itself, and it does that really well.

The performances are where the film truly thrives. Zazie Beetz absolutely owns the film. This is her show, and she carries it with confidence, physicality, and a ton of personality, but the supporting cast is just as committed.

Myha’la brings emotional grounding as Maria,Patricia Arquette is deliciously unhinged as the cult leader Lilith,Tom Felton and Heather Graham add chaotic energy to the madness, while Paterson Joseph adds a layer of intrigue within the insanity.

Not a single performance feels lazy. Everyone understands the tone and fully commits to it.

Despite the film being largely set inside one building, it never feels restricted. The Virgil itself becomes a character. Each floor adds to the chaos and absurdity of this world.

Technically, the film is firing. The editing by Luke Doolan is immaculate, especially in how it jumps between timelines without losing momentum. It keeps the narrative tight and engaging throughout. The music by Carlos Rafael Rivera is another standout. The action sequences are elevated by perfectly chosen tracks that add rhythm, tension, and even a bit of dark humor.

And a lot of this comes down to Kirill Sokolov. His direction is confident, stylish, and completely in control of the film’s chaotic tone. Balancing horror, comedy, and action isn’t easy, but he pulls it off in a way that feels intentional rather than messy.

In a year packed with massive blockbusters, “They Will Kill You” feels like the kind of film that might slip under the radar, but don’t be surprised if it slowly builds a following and earns cult classic status.

If you’re looking for a genuinely good film, one that’s fun, chaotic, and unapologetically entertaining. “They Will Kill You” might just be the one.
