Marcus Foligno recorded his first NHL hat trick Monday night, doubling his season goals total as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3 at Scotiabank Arena.
The 34-year-old Foligno scored three times, twice in the second period and once into an empty net in the third, in a dominant performance that helped the Wild extend their winning streak to two games.
Vladimir Tarasenko added two goals for Minnesota, while Ryan Hartman contributed a goal and an assist. Kirill Kaprizov and defensemen Quinn Hughes and Brock Faber each recorded two assists.
Hughes, who was acquired from Vancouver on Dec. 12, has been productive for the Wild with two goals and 18 assists in 18 games since the trade.
Filip Gustavsson stopped 27 shots for Minnesota, which opened a three-game road trip with the victory after being swept on a three-game homestand. The Wild defeated Buffalo 5-4 in overtime on Saturday.
Foligno gave Minnesota a 3-1 lead at 6:53 of the second period, scoring at even strength. Tarasenko followed with his second goal of the game at 8:24, and Foligno made it 5-1 on a power play with 46 seconds remaining in the period.
Auston Matthews scored his 25th goal of the season and added an assist for Toronto. John Tavares and Nicholas Robertson also scored for the Maple Leafs.
The Wild continue their road trip Tuesday night at Montreal, while the Maple Leafs host Detroit on Wednesday night.
