An abandoned dog named Aloka has become an unlikely ambassador for peace, walking alongside 19 Buddhist monks on a 2,300-mile journey from Fort Worth, Texas to Washington as the group promotes messages of unity and compassion across the United States.
The canine, believed to be an Indian Pariah breed, first joined the monks during their 112-day peace walk across India. The abandoned dog either found the monks or they found him, and he quickly became a loyal companion, following the group as they spread their message across the country.
Aloka faced significant hardships during that initial journey. He was hit by a car and later fell ill for an extended period. The monks loaded him into a truck to give him a break from walking, but Aloka jumped out and rejoined the mission on foot.
He followed the monks the whole time and wanted to walk, according to one monk who spoke in a social media video. The monk called Aloka a true hero whose determination inspires others.
The group of monks lives at the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana in Fort Worth. In October, 19 of them set out with Aloka on their current journey toward the nation’s capital. The 110-day walk is scheduled to conclude in Washington in February.
Texas Representative Nicole Collier told the Star-Telegram that the 2,300-mile walk is amazing and touches the hearts and minds of people. She said the journey represents community and interfaith solidarity at a time when noise often drowns out understanding and division can feel louder than unity.
By late December, the group had reached Atlanta. A live tracker on Facebook provides updates on their progress, and the group posts frequently to social media. Aloka has his own Instagram account.
The monks and their four-legged companion have received warm welcomes throughout the journey. A Dairy Queen store in Texas gave the monks ice cream and made sure Aloka received some too. Doctors in Alabama provided free medical checkups for the group. Crowds have gathered across the Sun Belt to meet the monks, share meals and offer well wishes as they move north toward Washington.
The official Walk for Peace Instagram page describes the journey as filled with both known and unforeseen challenges. The page states that with hearts anchored in calmness and minds set firmly on their purpose, the monks move forward step by step, embodying peace, resilience and unwavering determination on their sacred path toward the White House.
The walk is expected to cover 10 states before reaching Washington.
Aloka continues to serve as the group’s loyal companion. According to the Walk for Peace social media accounts, Aloka is a very good boy helping to carry the message of peace and harmony while watching over the monks.
The group previously completed their peace walk across India, where Aloka first joined them, before relocating to Texas and beginning the American journey. The monks chose the United States for their next peace walk to spread their message of unity in a time of increasing division.
