Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara announced Monday that police are investigating an overnight shooting in the city’s Jordan neighborhood that left one person dead.

At approximately 10:48 p.m. on November 2, officers from the Fourth Precinct responded to reports of gunfire on the 2900 block of Russell Avenue North. When they arrived, officers found a juvenile male suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial reports suggested the injury may have been self-inflicted, but investigators later received information indicating the victim may have been shot by another person. Officers subsequently took a juvenile male into custody as a person of interest. That individual was later booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of murder.

“Our thoughts are with the family of this young person tonight,” Chief O’Hara said in a statement. “As a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain this family is experiencing. We are working to determine the circumstances of what occurred.”

Forensic scientists processed the scene and collected evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased along with the official cause and manner of death.
