The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is now accepting applications for its Green Fertilizer Grant Program, a new initiative aimed at increasing the production of renewable fertilizers throughout the state. The program aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture while strengthening the state’s rural economy.
The MDA expects to award up to $3.8 million to agricultural and rural electric cooperatives registered under Minnesota statutes 308A or 308B. Eligible applicants can seek between $250,000 and $3.8 million for “business-ready and shovel-ready” projects that advance green fertilizer manufacturing in Minnesota.
Green fertilizers are nitrogen-based fertilizers produced from water, air, and renewable energy sources, rather than fossil fuels. State officials say such fertilizers have the potential to significantly cut emissions linked to traditional fertilizer production and use, which are among agriculture’s most significant environmental impacts.
“Local production of renewable fertilizer can help stabilize costs and ensure farmers have reliable access to the inputs they need,” said Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen. “Supporting innovation in this space helps our farmers, our economy, and our environment.”
The Green Fertilizer Grant Program aligns with the state’s broader climate and sustainability goals, including supporting technologies that help Minnesota farmers adapt to a changing climate while maintaining profitability.
Applications are due by Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025. Interested organizations can review complete eligibility requirements and application materials on the Green Fertilizer Program Grant webpage.
