MINNEAPOLIS — A Northeast Minneapolis neighborhood known for its inclusivity and small-business spirit is uniting behind one of its own after Fletcher’s Ice Cream and Café was targeted in two attempted arson attacks.
The owner, Jason Fletcher, has spoken publicly about the back-to-back attempted firebombings at his business in Minneapolis.
On the first incident, Fletcher said someone “got out of a minivan … threw a soda bottle containing an accelerant that was aflame… The bottle went through a window, spilled fuel on a couple of chairs, and caught them on fire.”
According to Fletcher, the second attack (less than 24 hours later) was done by the same person, but the wick fell out.
“We’re not sure if it’s because of the all-inclusive gay Pride flag, but it appears that it may be,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher acknowledged the fear and pressure of the situation but doubled down on his commitment to persevere and continue supporting the community. He also ensured that his employees remained safe during the investigation.
“I didn’t want my employees coming to work tomorrow knowing this person could potentially do something,” said Fletcher when he was told the suspect was in custody. “This is really big.”
According to reporting by Ubah Ali of WCCO, a man allegedly tried to set the café on fire twice within 24 hours, actions that were captured on surveillance video. Minneapolis police confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incidents.
Fletcher’s, located in the heart of Northeast Minneapolis, is recognized for its welcoming atmosphere and prominent display of Pride flags—a visible sign of support for the LGBTQ+ community. The firebombings, which left damage but no injuries, have sparked a strong community response and renewed calls for neighborhood safety.
Council Member Michael Rainville, who represents Minneapolis’ Third Ward, encouraged residents to show solidarity with the business at a Neighborhood Safety Rally scheduled for Thursday, October 23, at 6 p.m. at Fletcher’s Ice Cream.
“Please join me and your neighbors… to show solidarity after Fletcher’s was targeted in two arson attacks,” Rainville wrote in a message to constituents.

A flyer promoting the rally reads, “Stand with Fletcher’s. Stand together,” urging neighbors to stop by for “a scoop, a coffee, or a kind word.” The event aims to emphasize kindness, safety, and the importance of protecting local businesses that make Minneapolis neighborhoods unique.
The incident has drawn broad support across social media, where residents and customers have praised Fletcher’s for its resilience and commitment to the community.
“When we look out for each other, we keep our community strong and safe,” the flyer says. “When the world feels divided, we come together.”
