The Guthrie Theater is set to stage “Primary Trust,” directed by Marshall Jones III, with previews beginning Saturday, October 11. The official opening is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, and performances will run through Sunday, November 16, on the McGuire Proscenium Stage.

“Primary Trust” tells the story of Kenneth, a 38-year-old living in upstate New York, whose life changes dramatically after losing his longtime job at a local bookstore. Encouraged by his best friend Bert, Kenneth begins a new chapter working at Primary Trust Bank, confronting past traumas, forming new relationships, and discovering the value of community and human connection.

Artistic Director Joseph Haj said, “Eboni Booth’s story of friendship, new beginnings, and human connection beautifully reminds us that sometimes the most powerful steps we can take are small steps toward each other.” Director Marshall Jones III described the play as a coming-of-age story about overcoming childhood trauma, praising its blend of humor, tenderness, and emotional depth.

The cast includes Bryce Michael Wood as Kenneth, making his Guthrie debut, William Sturdivant as Bert, Nubia Monks in multiple roles, and Pearce Bunting portraying Sam/Clay/Le Pousselet Bartender. The production emphasizes authentic, nuanced performances that bring Booth’s richly layered characters to life.

“Primary Trust” premiered Off-Broadway on May 4, 2023, and has become one of the most-produced plays in the country. It won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play. Select performances at the Guthrie will feature ASL interpretation, audio description, and open captions. Tickets are available through the Guthrie Theater Box Office and online at guthrietheater.org.
