MINNEAPOLIS — Two men were fatally shot and a third man was arrested Saturday afternoon following an altercation inside a downtown Minneapolis apartment building, according to police.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said officers from the First Precinct responded at about 1:51 p.m. to a report of a fight in the lobby of a building at 15 E. Grant St. The call was upgraded to a shooting before police arrived.
Officers found one man in the first-floor lobby and another in a second-floor hallway. Both had fatal gunshot wounds.
The first officer on scene encountered the suspect and arrested him without incident.
Preliminary information indicates the three men, all residents of the building and known to one another, were involved in an argument that escalated to gunfire. A shotgun and ammunition were recovered at the scene.
“While today’s event is not random, it is yet another painful reminder on how quickly arguments can turn deadly when guns are involved,” O’Hara said. “We know how frightening it is for residents who heard the fight and heard gunshots inside their building. This is an active investigation and our homicide investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led to this tragedy.”
The Minneapolis Police Department’s forensic unit processed the scene and collected evidence. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the deceased and determine the official cause of death.
