A violent attack at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, left at least four people dead and eight wounded on Sunday morning, as authorities investigate whether the assault was a targeted act of violence.

According to police, the incident began around 10:25 a.m. when the assailant drove a pickup truck into the church building, exited with weapons, opened fire, and then set the interior ablaze using gasoline. First responders arrived swiftly. Two officers pursued the suspect and engaged in a brief gun battle, fatally wounding him approximately eight minutes after the attack began.

“Violence in a place of worship is a cowardly and criminal act. Our prayers are with the victims and their families during this terrible tragedy,” FBI Director Kash Patel said.

Investigators discovered evidence that the suspect may have carried explosive devices, though it is not yet confirmed whether they were used. The FBI has taken a lead role, labeling the attack an “act of targeted violence” and dispatching agents to assist with the investigation.

“The Church is in communication with local law enforcement … we offer thanks to the emergency responders … we are deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers and concern,” a Spokesperson for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said.

Authorities continue to search the charred remains of the building for additional victims. Some bodies were found in the rubble, raising concerns that the confirmed death toll may rise. At least one victim remains in critical condition; others are listed as stable.

President Donald Trump said Sunday on social media, “This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”

“The Trump Administration will keep the Public posted, as we always do. In the meantime, PRAY for the victims, and their families. THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!” Trump said.

Trump also wrote that the FBI is leading the investigative efforts. Trump said that while the suspect is dead, there is “still a lot to learn.”

Local and state leaders have expressed shock and grief. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the violence in a place of worship “unacceptable.” The church leadership stated that they were cooperating with law enforcement and extended their condolences to the affected families.

Because the motive is not yet clear, investigators are examining the suspect’s residence, communications, and any potential connections to threats or ideological views.
