MINNEAPOLIS — The City of Minneapolis will install a new playground in the Loring Greenway next month, replacing the one removed in 2024. This project will cost about $173,500 in the downtown area.
The Loring Greenway Playground in Minneapolis was taken down on November 12, 2024, after a safety inspection in mid-September found issues like potential head and neck hazards. Built in 2003 with $60,000 from the City’s Neighborhood Revitalization Project, it was a popular spot for local kids and families. Its removal, done by the City’s Public Works department without notice, faced criticism from residents for the lack of communication and a replacement plan.
“We strive to make Minneapolis a safe, accessible city for working families,” said Mayor Jacob Frey. “This playground will serve as an improved place for the community members of Loring Park to connect, relax, and make memories with their kids. I can’t wait for my two daughters to try it out themselves.”
The new playground will benefit local families and downtown Minneapolis visitors. A 2024 inspection found safety issues with the old playground, which had been there for 25 years, leading to its removal. City officials have collaborated with community members to develop a vision for the new playground, funded by the Hennepin County Youth Sports Playground Grant program.

Council Member Katie Cashman emphasized the importance of playgrounds for children’s development. “Some may say that a playground is a frivolous pet project. However, when you are the caregiver of young kids, you know that playgrounds make a world of difference in the emotional and physical well-being of a child,” she said. “They encourage exercise, imaginative play, and can lead to the creation of friendships that last a lifetime. That is always something worth fighting for, especially in a bustling downtown neighborhood like Loring Park.”
Tim Sexton, Director of Public Works, said the city collaborated closely with residents over the past year.
“We’ve been collaborating with the Loring Park community for the past year to make this announcement a reality. I’m thrilled to share this news with them. We can’t wait to see this new playground become a welcoming space for nearby families and downtown visitors to the Loring Greenway for generations to come.”

The project will include site work, new playground equipment, and ADA-compliant safety surfacing. Installation is scheduled for October, though exact dates are still being finalized.
The city says the playground will provide children a safe and engaging space while supporting physical activity, imaginative play, and community connection in a central Minneapolis location.
