MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old man in connection with the August 26 mass shooting that left one person dead and six others injured near the intersection of East 29th Street and Clinton Avenue. The shooting occurred near a large homeless encampment that had been established on a private parking lot owned by Hamoudi Sabri.
The shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. on August 26 when officers from the Third Precinct responded to a ShotSpotter activation and multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire on the 2900 block of Clinton Avenue. At the scene, officers found a man fatally wounded and another man suffering life-threatening injuries. Four other men and one woman were later found injured at locations along Lake Street, about one to two blocks from the original shooting.
According to police, a suspect stepped out of a vehicle and fired an estimated 30 rounds from a high-velocity .223 rifle at a group gathered on the sidewalk before fleeing in the car. Forensic investigators processed the scene and collected evidence. The six victims who survived were transported to Hennepin Healthcare Hospital. All were expected to survive their injuries.
The encampment and city response
The shooting occurred near a large homeless encampment that had been established on a private parking lot owned by Hamoudi Sabri. The encampment had been the subject of ongoing legal disputes between Sabri and the city. In July, the City of Minneapolis served Sabri with a notice to clear the camp, citing health and safety violations, including drug paraphernalia and lack of sanitation. Despite accumulating $15,000 in fines, Sabri continued to allow the encampment to remain.
Following the shooting, Mayor Jacob Frey ordered the immediate closure of the encampment. City workers dismantled the site on September 16, sparking protest and backlash. Sabri criticized city leaders for displacing vulnerable individuals instead of providing trauma support and shelter, accusing them of masking the problem rather than resolving it.
Arrest and charges
On September 22, Trayveion Alvin Green was arrested on an arrest warrant for murder. Officers located Green around 10:45 p.m. near the 600 block of 1st Avenue N and arrested him without incident. He has been booked into the Hennepin County Jail and charged with seven counts of second-degree murder with intent, not premeditated.
Green is the third person charged in connection with the case. On August 26, the day of the shooting, police arrested Ryan Timothy Quinn and Tiffany Lynn Marie Martindale. They were later charged with aiding an offender on probation or parole.
“These arrests underscore the professionalism and relentless dedication of our highly skilled investigators,” O’Hara said. “This mass shooting outside an occupied school had a chilling impact on our entire community, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this investigation. We hope that bringing this shooter in to be held accountable for his actions will begin to provide a sense of justice for the victims and their families.”
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the man who was killed, along with the official cause and manner of death.
