Director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn officially unveiled that the adventures of Superman and Lex Luthor in the new DC Universe (DCU) sandbox are set to return quicker than you think.
Gunn released a piece of teaser art illustrated by legendary artist Jim Lee to announce the “Superman” follow-up, as “Man of Tomorrow” is the next film, forever added to an ever-changing slate of the comic book theatrical landscape, with an official release date set for July 9, 2027.
In Lee’s image, we see David Corenswet’s Superman standing side-by-side with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor and looking surprisingly pally. It should be noted and observed that Lex is decked out in his classic green and purple War Suit from the comics, and Superman holds a screwdriver (not sure what this means, but nonetheless, this is a great tease from Gunn).
Also to note, both Corenswet and Hoult shared “Man of Tomorrow” artwork confirming they will both star in the movie, but once again, no story details have been announced. In terms of speculation, “Superman” and “Peacemaker” star Isabela Merced has seemingly announced her involvement by sharing Gunn’s post with the words “See you soon,” and “Lanterns” star Aaron Pierre (John Stewart) also responded to the filmmaker’s original announcement by commenting, “Yes, indeed!”
And it should be known that not even the trades seem to know what Gunn is plotting. The second (the one shared by Hoult) shows the Man of Steel exchanging blows with his enemy (in all three pieces, the LuthorCorp CEO is decked out in his classic War Suit from the comics).
The third shared by Corenswet provides a brief tease of the classic characters looking ready to charge into battle. Gunn also commented on both IG accounts by offering “See you soon!!” to Corenswet and to Hoult, “See you on set in not too long!” It should be acknowledged that, currently, Gunn’s shared continuity marches forward as the HBO MAX DC Studios productions are coming into shape, as season two of “Peacemaker” is nearing its 3rd episode, “Lanterns” is currently in post-production.
“Supergirl” (directed by Craig Gillespie, written by Ana Mogueira, and starring Milly Alcock) is primed for a June 26, 2026, theatrical release next year. “Clayface” (directed by James Watkins, written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, and starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie) is about a week into principal photography and filming, as set photos continue to arise from Liverpool, England, where the R-rated DCU production is well on its way ahead of a September 11, 2026 release date; adding to the ever-expanding theatrical and ever-changing slate, under the leadership of Gunn.
In addition to the crowded 2027 slate, fans should also remember that Matt Reeves’ “The Batman: Part 2” is set to release later that fall on October 1, 2027, which, according to Deadline, is set to begin filming in April of 2026. “Superman” is currently streaming on all digital platforms.
