Spotify and James Gunn curate ‘Superman’ character playlists ahead of July film release

1 min read

With just days to go before the release of Superman, Spotify and DC Studios have teamed up with filmmaker James Gunn to offer fans a unique look into the film’s characters—through music.

Starting today, Spotify listeners can stream curated playlists inspired by the personalities and emotional arcs of Clark Kent, Lex Luthor, Eve, Metamorpho, and The Engineer.

Each list is hand-picked by Gunn himself, who also recorded commentary explaining why he selected each track. More character playlists, including those for Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, will arrive July 8, with additional drops featuring Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern landing on the film’s premiere date, July 11.

“These playlists are more than just background music,” Gunn says in a video accompanying the release. “I probably had more fun doing this than anything else I’ve done in the past couple of years… I had to really think about who they were as people and imagine what kind of music they’d be into.”

    Character playlists now available

Clark Kent: A tracklist packed with edgy, feel-good anthems like “Don’t Stop Believin” by Journey and “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat Worldthat keep Superman flying high.

Lex Luthor: An eclectic mix to fuel a villain’s ego, including songs like “Fame” by David Bowie and “This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us” by Sparks

Eve: Featuring songs like “Manchild” by Sabrina Carpenter and “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift, this tracklist channels Metropolis’ it-girl energy.

Metamorpho: A mix of moody synths with a melancholy edge, this list includes “Digging Your Scene” by The Blow Monkeys and “I Was Never a Normal Boy” by Nightmare of You

The Engineer: A dark, serious playlist pulsing with mechanical beats, with songs like “La Mer” by Nine Inch Nails and “Archangel” by Burial

The playlists are part of a broader promotional campaign leading up to the release of Superman, directed by Gunn and produced under DC Studios’ new slate. The film stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
