In a 6-3 decision, the United States Supreme Court has upheld a ban on gender-affirming care for minors, backing a ban in Tennessee targeting transgender youth.
Approximately half of the nation’s states have enacted laws similar to Tennessee’s. However, federal courts have disagreed on the constitutionality of these laws, and the case filed by the Biden administration in Tennessee was the first to reach the Supreme Court.
President Donald Trump, who campaigned for reelection on the platform of ending “transgender lunacy,” has taken several steps aimed at reversing the progress made by this community.
The court’s majority opinion, authored by Chief Justice John Roberts and joined by the other five conservative justices, was accompanied by a dissent from the three liberal justices.
Since 2020, Republican-led states across the nation have enacted a series of laws restricting the lives of transgender Americans, particularly minors.
