BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — A shelter-in-place order remains in effect in Brooklyn Park after a series of targeted attacks early June 14 involving state legislators and their families. Authorities say the suspect—who may have been impersonating a police officer—opened fire at multiple homes in Brooklyn Park and neighboring Champlin.

The incident prompted a swift response from local law enforcement, with backup from state agencies. At least one person has been taken into custody, and another suspect remains at large. Police have warned residents to stay indoors, keep doors locked, and not open them unless two verified officers are present.

Among those reportedly targeted in the attacks are Minnesota Senate President Bobby Joe Champion, Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, and Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman. None of the lawmakers or their families were physically harmed, according to early reports.

Governor Tim Walz has activated the State Emergency Operations Center and is expected to provide updates at a press conference scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday.

The attacks began in the early hours of the morning and involved multiple residences. Brooklyn Park officials have urged residents in a three-mile radius surrounding Edinburgh Golf Course to remain inside. SWAT teams and tactical units have been deployed, and K-9 teams are assisting in the search.

As of this writing, law enforcement has not released the suspect’s name but said he is believed to be a white male who may have been wearing law enforcement gear or falsely identifying himself as a police officer. Officials are asking anyone with doorbell footage or tips to contact the Brooklyn Park Police Department.

Meanwhile, community events—including this weekend’s Juneteenth celebration at North Hennepin Community College and the upcoming River Park Fest—may be impacted depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

What to know now

  • Shelter-in-place is active in areas surrounding Edinburgh Golf Course.
  • Do not open your door unless officers can verify themselves through dispatch or identification.
  • Governor Walz has activated emergency operations and plans a public briefing Friday morning.
